Where Can You Fish From Shore in the Florida Keys? Public Fishing Spots by Area

Finding a place to fish from shore in the Florida Keys can be harder than catching the fish.

The water is everywhere.

Public access is not.

A shoreline that looks perfect from the road may be private property, protected habitat, part of a marina, or simply impossible to reach safely.

The good news is that there are still plenty of legitimate places to fish without a boat.

You just need to know where to look.

This guide breaks down Florida Keys shore fishing access by area, from Key Largo to the Lower Keys.

Florida Keys Shore Fishing Starts With Legal Access

Do not judge a fishing spot by Google Maps alone.

An empty-looking shoreline does not automatically mean you can park and fish there.

Look for:

  • State parks
  • Public fishing bridges
  • Designated fishing platforms
  • Public waterfront parks
  • Shore fishing areas
  • Legal bridge access
  • Public piers
  • Beaches where fishing is allowed

Florida’s FWC also maintains fishing-access resources for anglers looking for shore, pier, dock, and boating access. MyFWC

Do You Need a License to Fish From Shore?

Usually, yes.

Visitors age 16 and older generally need a Florida saltwater fishing license to fish independently from shore unless an exemption applies.

Florida residents who only fish from shore or a structure attached to land can obtain the state’s no-cost shoreline saltwater license.

Non-residents need a regular non-resident license unless they qualify for another exemption. MyFWC

Current non-resident options listed by FWC are:

  • 3-day license: $17
  • 7-day license: $30
  • Annual license: $47

Check the current FWC site before buying because fees can change. MyFWC

Key Largo Shore Fishing

Key Largo is the first major fishing area you reach after leaving mainland South Florida.

There are plenty of boats here.

Land-based access takes a little more planning.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is one of the clearer public shore-fishing options in Key Largo.

The park currently identifies three areas where saltwater fishing is allowed from shore.

The park recommends asking at the ranger station for directions to the fishing areas. Florida State Parks

That makes this a good choice for visitors who would rather fish somewhere with clearly defined public access than guess along the highway.

A Florida saltwater fishing license is required unless you qualify for an exemption. Florida State Parks

The park is located at:

102601 Overseas Highway
Key Largo, FL 33037

The park is normally open from 8 a.m. until sunset. Florida State Parks

What Might You Catch Around Key Largo?

Depending on where you fish, season, tide, and conditions, possible fish can include:

  • Mangrove snapper
  • Jacks
  • Barracuda
  • Tarpon
  • Snook
  • Small reef fish
  • Other inshore species

Do not expect shore access to give you the same fishing as running offshore on a charter.

Think shallow water, mangroves, channels, edges, and structure.

Tavernier Shore Fishing

Tavernier sits between Key Largo and Islamorada.

One public waterfront area visitors often encounter is Harry Harris Park.

Harry Harris Park

Harry Harris Park is a 21-acre oceanfront Monroe County park.

It has:

  • Protected beach
  • Swimming area
  • Boat ramp
  • Picnic areas
  • Playground
  • Waterfront access

The park sits at the end of East Beach Road in Tavernier and is open daily from sunrise until one-half hour after sunset. Monroe County, FL

The county does not market Harry Harris primarily as a fishing pier, so check posted rules before casting.

The broader lesson is useful:

A public waterfront park may give you access to the water, but that does not always mean every section is open to fishing.

Always check signs.

Islamorada Shore and Bridge Fishing

Islamorada has some of the strongest bridge-fishing access in the Upper and Middle Keys.

Current Florida Keys tourism information lists several bridges open to fishing in this area. Florida Keys & Key West

Channel 2 Bridge

Channel 2 is around mile marker 73.

It is currently listed among the Florida Keys bridges open to fishing. Florida Keys & Key West

Bridge fishing can put you around:

  • Current
  • Pilings
  • Channels
  • Bait movement
  • Deeper water

Possible catches may include snapper, jacks, barracuda, tarpon, sharks, and other species depending on conditions.

Channel 5 Bridge

The south end of Channel 5 around mile marker 71 is also currently listed as open to fishing. Florida Keys & Key West

As with any bridge, parking and pedestrian access matter just as much as the fishing.

Do not improvise parking along the Overseas Highway.

Long Key Bridge

Long Key Bridge, around mile markers 63 to 65, remains one of the best-known land-based fishing areas in the Keys.

It is currently listed among bridges open to fishing. Florida Keys & Key West

Current Florida State Parks information also notes that the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail includes fishing platforms associated with Long Key and other historic bridges. Florida State Parks

Long Key State Park

Long Key State Park gives you another type of access.

Instead of fishing from elevated bridge structure, you can fish shallow coastal water.

The park specifically lists flats fishing among its recreational activities.

Fishing within the park must follow all current size, bag, capture-method, and seasonal regulations. Florida State Parks

The park is located at:

67400 Overseas Highway
Long Key, FL 33001

One current caution matters.

As of late September 2026, the park warns that portions may temporarily close because of tidal flooding from king tides. Florida State Parks

Check park conditions before driving there.

Marathon Shore Fishing

Marathon gives land-based anglers several different styles of water.

You have bridges, channels, shallow flats, and park access.

Tom’s Harbor Cut

Tom’s Harbor Cut near mile marker 61.2 is currently listed as open to fishing. Florida Keys & Key West

Tom’s Harbor Channel

Tom’s Harbor Channel around mile marker 60.6 is also currently listed as open, with access from the north end only. Florida Keys & Key West

That “north end only” detail is exactly why current access information matters.

Do not assume both sides of a bridge are legal fishing areas.

Curry Hammock State Park

Curry Hammock State Park is another public option near Marathon.

Fishing is allowed in the park.

The park contains mangrove, seagrass, and shallow-water habitat.

Florida State Parks says fish found or seen in the area can include:

  • Tarpon
  • Snook
  • Redfish
  • Mangrove snapper
  • Bonefish

Tide changes can be particularly interesting because moving water can trigger fish activity. Florida State Parks

The park is located at:

56200 Overseas Highway
Marathon, FL 33050

It is normally open from 8 a.m. until sunset. Florida State Parks

Seven Mile Bridge Area

The Seven Mile Bridge area is one of the most recognizable fishing areas in the Keys.

But you need to pay close attention to which section is open.

Current Florida Keys tourism information lists the south end of Seven Mile Bridge around mile marker 40 as open to fishing. Florida Keys & Key West

Nearby historic bridge sections can have different access rules.

Do not assume every old bridge section is open because anglers used it years ago.

Lower Keys Bridge Fishing

The Lower Keys have several currently listed bridge-fishing locations.

These include:

  • Spanish Harbor, around MM 34
  • South Pine Channel Historic Bridge, around MM 30
  • Kemp Channel, around MM 23
  • Bow Channel, around MM 20
  • Park Channel, around MM 18.5
  • Shark Channel, around MM 11

These are currently listed by the Florida Keys tourism authority as bridges open to fishing. Florida Keys & Key West

That makes the Lower Keys especially interesting if you enjoy moving from bridge to bridge.

Some Historic Bridges Are Closed to Fishing

This is just as important as knowing which ones are open.

Current Florida Keys information lists several historic bridges as closed to fishing, including:

  • Little Duck Key-Missouri Historic Bridge
  • Missouri-Ohio Historic Bridge
  • Ohio-Bahia Honda Historic Bridge
  • Lower Sugarloaf Channel

Do not fish a closed bridge just because you see other people standing nearby. Florida Keys & Key West

Bahia Honda State Park

Bahia Honda State Park is another Lower Keys option worth knowing.

Fishing is allowed within the park subject to current regulations.

Spearfishing, possession of spearfishing equipment, and collection of tropical fish are prohibited within park boundaries. Florida State Parks

The park can become extremely busy.

Current park information warns that day-use areas may temporarily close when capacity is reached, especially on weekends and holidays. Florida State Parks

If you plan to fish there, going early can save you frustration.

What About Key West?

Key West is more developed than much of the Keys.

That can make random shoreline access harder than it looks on a map.

Your best strategy is to concentrate on clearly legal public waterfront areas rather than trying to squeeze into marina or resort property.

If your main goal is easy fishing access around Key West, you may find bridge fishing in the Lower Keys simpler than searching for an empty piece of shoreline downtown.

What Is the Best Shore Fishing Spot in the Florida Keys?

There is no single answer.

The better question is:

What kind of fishing do you want?

If you want current and structure, try a legal fishing bridge.

If you want shallow flats, a state park may make more sense.

If you have children, public parks with restrooms and easier parking may be much more comfortable.

If you want tarpon or larger fish, channels and bridges may give you better opportunities than a shallow beach.

Which Florida Keys Area Is Best for Shore Fishing?

Each part of the Keys has advantages.

Key Largo

Good for:

  • State park access
  • Mangrove and shallow-water fishing
  • Visitors staying close to mainland South Florida

Islamorada and Long Key

Good for:

  • Bridge fishing
  • Historic fishing platforms
  • Shallow flats
  • Easy access to several different fishing styles

Marathon

Good for:

  • Bridge fishing
  • State park access
  • Channels
  • Central location

Lower Keys

Good for:

  • Multiple bridge-fishing opportunities
  • Less developed stretches
  • Moving between several fishing areas

Key West

Good for:

  • Mixing fishing with a larger vacation
  • Accessing Lower Keys spots by car
  • Party boats and charter alternatives if shore access does not work out

Stop at a Local Bait Shop Before Fishing

This may be the most useful thing you do.

Public access tells you where you are allowed to fish.

It does not tell you where the fish are biting today.

Ask a bait shop:

“I’m staying nearby and want to fish from shore. Where is legal and worth trying right now?”

Then ask what bait they recommend.

Our Florida Keys Bait Shops guide can help you find one.

Bring a Simple Shore Fishing Setup

You do not need a truck full of tackle.

Start with:

  • Medium or medium-heavy spinning rod
  • Saltwater spinning reel
  • Leader material
  • Hooks
  • Several sinker sizes
  • Pliers
  • Bait
  • Water
  • Sunscreen
  • Polarized sunglasses

If you are fishing a bridge, consider how you will land a fish from above the water.

If you are wading, bring proper footwear and keep your phone and keys dry.

Check the Tide Before You Go

A fishing spot may look completely different six hours later.

Moving water can:

  • Push bait through channels
  • Put fish around bridge pilings
  • Flood shallow flats
  • Expose or cover structure
  • Change how much weight you need

Do not look only at the clock.

Look at the tide.

Check Current Access Before Every Trip

This matters more in the Keys than most visitors realize.

Bridges can close.

Parks can flood.

Construction can affect parking.

Storm damage can change access.

A spot that worked last year may not be available today.

Current official sources are worth checking before you drive.

Build a Florida Keys Shore Fishing Day Around Several Spots

One advantage of land-based fishing is mobility.

You are not committed to one location.

A simple day could look like this:

Morning

Fish a legal bridge while the temperature is cooler.

Midday

Stop for lunch and visit a bait shop.

Afternoon

Try a state park or shallower shoreline.

Evening

Return to a bridge when the tide starts moving again.

If one location is dead, move.

That freedom is one of the best parts of fishing without a boat.
