Fishing in the Florida Keys

Whether you are an avid fisherman or just planning on going for a day of fishing, the Florida Keys has plenty to offer. The 125-mile-long string of islands surrounded by the Florida Reef (the only living coral barrier reef in the United States) creates a fishing environment that is unique to this part of the world.

Flats Fishing

The Florida Keys are home to some of the best flats fishing in the world. Whether you are an experienced fisherman or just want to try your hand at this exciting sport, the Florida Keys flats have something for everyone!

In fact, if you’re a beginner, the flats are a great place to practice techniques like sight casting. The shallow and clear waters of the flats allow for greater visibility, which is especially helpful when trying to spot a fish.

If you’re looking for a thrill, try your luck at fishing for tarpon. These elusive inshore giants are found in the flats year round, though spring is usually the best time to catch them as the water warms up.

For the ultimate in inshore fishing, book a day with a bonefishing guide. They specialize in fly fishing or spin fishing for bonefish and can help you land that coveted trophy. They will also teach you about the flats’ ecosystem and how to make the most of your experience.

Bridge Fishing

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just getting started, the Florida Keys have some of the best bridge fishing in the country. Take a drive down the 113-mile Overseas Highway, and you’ll find 42 bridges connecting the Keys, and countless fish beneath them.

For example, the Seven Mile bridge in Marathon is a popular spot for tarpon, snappers, and grouper during the warmer months, and spanish mackerel and blue runners during the winter. You can fish directly from the bridge or drift near it on a boat.

You can use jigs or a slip sinker rig to catch these fish. Live shrimp or squid are the most common baits, but you can also use pilchards and pinfish. However, you should be careful because a lot of small critters can peck away at your bait and cut your line. To protect your tackle, you can use a monofilament line or a braided one. You can also rig your hook with a cork or steel leader.

Reef Fishing

The Florida Keys are home to one of the largest natural coral reefs in the world. This natural reef system draws recreational fishermen and charter boats from mid-way down the coast to the Keys.

The reefs are a natural habitat for fish such as yellowtail and mutton snapper, kingfish, mackerel, and jacks. Sailfish sometimes use them as a feeding ground, too.

If you are interested in fishing the reefs, contact a local charter boat and arrange a trip to the best spots. They will provide you with the right gear and bait.

Reefs are a navigational safety hazard, so if you’re not familiar with them, it’s recommended that you hire a captain to guide you. A knowledgeable guide will know the best places to go and can help you catch more fish than you could ever imagine!

Kayak Fishing

Kayak fishing is an amazing way to experience the Florida keys. The pristine waters are full of tropical fish and you can kayak right off the beach.

The key to a successful kayak fishing adventure is good planning and a stable boat. The best kayaks are stable enough that the passengers can stand up, making long casting easier and reducing fatigue from a long paddle.

You’ll also want to have some gear to keep your catch fresh. A cooler strapped to your deck works well, though not all kayaks come equipped with one.

Sun protection is also a must, as the Florida sun can be very harsh on your skin. Be sure to wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses for added protection.
