Fishing in the Florida Keys
When it comes to fishing the Florida Keys, there are many different species of fish that you can target. These include Yellowtail snapper, Barracuda, and Mahi-mahi. You can also find a variety of other fish, such as grouper and Amberjacks.
Mahi-mahi
The Florida Keys are one of the best places to fish for Mahi-mahi. This tropical fish is popular for both eating and catching. They are a favorite of anglers, as they have good jumping abilities and a great taste. These colorful fish are also a great source of vitamins A and B12, selenium, and phosphorus.
The best time to go mahi fishing is in the spring or early summer. The fish can be found in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. During this time, the fish is likely to travel in large schools. You can also find the fish in the open waters of the Gulfstream.
Yellowtail snapper
Whether you’re a first-time fisherman or a seasoned veteran, you’ll be able to have fun and catch a variety of fish during a Florida Keys fishing trip. One of the most common fish you’ll find is the Yellowtail Snapper. It’s a fun fish to catch and a great meal.
You can fish for yellowtail from the shore, on the reef or around shipwrecks. During the summer, you’ll have the best chances of catching these fun, tasty fish.
The Yellowtail is often caught in schools. This species has a distinctive lateral yellow stripe on its snout, along with a long, forked tail.
It is a light colored fish that has a pinkish to white flesh. This fish is one of the most popular food items in Florida. They’re known for their delicious white fillets and can be prepared in a variety of ways.
Amberjacks
Floating debris and wrecks provide a lot of food for Amberjacks. This is a common reason for their appearance around artificial reefs. While these fish are often caught on jigs, they will hit most live baits.
The Florida Keys are a great place to go for fishing for Amberjacks. The best time to fish for these fish is during the winter when they are more likely to be in shallow water. However, these fish are strong and can be challenging to catch.
These fish can reach lengths of over 75 inches. They can also weigh several hundred pounds. It is important to have the right type of tackle when fishing for these fish.
Barracuda
The Barracuda is a large and opportunistic predator. It is an excellent sportfish that is found throughout the Atlantic Ocean. They can be caught using live bait or artificial lures.
The Barracuda is one of the most underrated gamefish on the flats. This is because they can be found in virtually any marine environment.
The Great Barracuda is an extremely powerful ambush predator. In the Florida Keys, this species is abundant at certain times of the year.
Barracudas are usually seen around the edges of shallow waters, including channels, white holes, or islands. However, they can also be seen in deeper water.
A large Great Barracuda can weigh up to 100 pounds. Despite their size, the barracuda is rarely a threat to humans.
Grouper
There are plenty of good fishing spots in the Florida Keys. Some of the most popular places to fish for Grouper include Key West, Islamorada, and Marathon. Each place has its own unique offerings. However, you will have to choose which location you want to concentrate on.
Fishing for grouper can be a fun and rewarding experience. They are plentiful and provide excellent table fare. However, they can be a challenge to land. In fact, you’ll need to get an experienced, professional to help you.
Grouper are known as bottom dwellers, and they can be found anywhere along the coast. Their mouth-watering meat is soft and tender. The flesh is also sweet.
Tarpon
Tarpon are a huge game fish. The largest ever recorded was a monster that weighed more than 286 pounds. Fortunately, these giants are catch and release only in Florida. However, they still hold a special place in the Keys.
The best time to fish for tarpon is during the summer months, when the water is warm and turbulence is minimal. This makes spotting and catching them easier. You can find them in small channels that make it easy to cast a line, as well as in deeper water moats around the smaller keys.
There are several different types of bait to use. A mullet is a great choice. For some reason, they’re favored by the tarpon.
