The ball Just in case he's there Dan's our Angler And he's just got a shrimp rigged with a Float we're fishing right at the surface Take another pitch on that buoy We're on Ricky's Expo by the way Foreign To go All right we're on Oh oops oops The fish are not that hard to find we Just find the buoy line and they would Lay up and bask a little bit against it But they're not that easy to catch as Dan demonstrates [Music] Dave Our researchers are looking for smaller Fish so we can insert some tracking Devices and monitor their movement and Growth it's very overcast for Sight Fishing and it's very Breezy to not be Casting with any type of lead or weights Foreign Being conducted by the Gulf States Council for marine fisheries commission One of those like that Paul is our angler now from University Of Southern Mississippi he's going to Pitch on this triple tail All right we've just been cruising the Buoy line Ricky's been keeping this 25-foot
Contender about 20 feet off the buoy you Don't want to spook them you go right up On them They're gonna die So you gotta look for them All right Let's go Paul Got another pitch on them our fish is Still in position [Music] Failing this wind It's a bite Coming right Upon Us target-sized fish Come on There she is One way to get it good looking triple Tail I'll let you decide why it's called A triple tail Nice England worked there Paul all right Thank you sir okay Now we gotta get to work And throw that one in the Live Well for Now All right these guys are steady in our Catch for some scientific study now we Are targeting small fish undersized fish Remember that the tripletail has to be 18 inches to take home and there's a bag Limit of two we're targeting the smaller Fish and we're going to insert a smaller Acoustic transmitter type device so We'll be able to monitor the fish longer And keep track of their growth So this is heavy scientific stuff
I'm watching our scientists to set up Their equipment here and there's a lot Going on I'm not going to bother them With questions but when we do get to Actually uh pull put the prepare the Fish for the insertion of the of the tag And the transmitter I'll let these guys Tell you what's going on So here's Here's the little tags they uh the Academics call them spaghetti tags it's Got a little Barb in it It has a number on it to identify each Individual fish and it also has the Phone number on it that you want to call Should you catch one of these tagged Fish now it's a lot of fun to do that it Helps us keep track of dishes to what a Sportsman a conservationists would do if It running under conservation fishing Methods out of Bud and Mary's for 77 Years and that's why the fish is still Here it's fun to come out here catch These tag fish and we'll report them Back in so we're going to share what That's all about here's your tag boss Hi my name is Paul Grammer I'm with the University of Southern Mississippi in The center for Fisheries research and Development so we're going to tag a Little triple tail here with an acoustic Tag this is a Nova cv9 so it's a it's One of the smaller transmitters that That we implant and this will send an
Acoustic signal out to receivers that Are spread out throughout the the entire Gulf and just throughout the world Really it's a real common technology now That a lot of folks are using to do to Track the movements of various various Fish species So we're gonna do Is get some lengths here So we'll record the links real quick So 303 for standard Is there a standard link or is it this Total it's just total on there oh sorry About it all right Three six seven [Music] Centimeters all right that's a Millimeters millimeters So then we'll go ahead Just a little bit of water in here A little while In there try to keep the eyes covered so It's just it's a fish calm now I would Think that you're also conserved about Preserving this fish's slime coating yep So that's why we're using the wet towels When they're doing everything so we're Trying not to we're trying to hold the Fish so that we can we can do the Surgery like we need to [Music] Without without hurting it [Music] Just need to pull a couple scales back

Fishing in the Florida Keys
|
Fishing in the Florida Keys
There are many types of fishing in the Florida Keys. Some of the species you can find there are Barracuda, Grouper, Mahi-mahi, and Yellowtail snappers. These fish can be caught using various methods, including kayak fishing. However, the most popular method is by casting a line. The fish will swim in the ocean to find food and are then caught by tying a lure to the end of a line.
Yellowtail snappers
In the Florida Keys, fishing for yellowtail snappers is a popular activity. These smaller reef fish are common all year round. They are a good food fish.
Yellowtail Snappers feed on shrimp and worms. They tend to live in shallow areas of coastal reefs, but can be caught in deeper waters. The largest size is 30 inches. Adult Yellowtail Snappers tend to gather in schools on the reef.
Yellowtail Snappers can be found in the waters of the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. They are most commonly seen around shipwrecks.
Fishing for Yellowtail Snappers in the Florida Keys is a great way to spend time with family. This fish is also fun to catch on light tackle.
Aside from being a good food fish, yellowtail snappers are very popular with anglers. Their bluish olive color, bright yellow stripes, and forked tail make them easy to identify.
Mahi-mahi
If you’re a fisherman looking to go mahi-mahi fishing in Florida, the Keys are a great place to find the fish. Mahi-mahi are common in the waters around the Keys, and they’re a good source of protein and selenium.
Depending on the location you’re going to, the best times to catch mahi-mahi are April, May and June. The best time to fish is early morning or late evening. However, the waters are very quiet during the weekdays, and it can be hard to find a bite.
It’s a good idea to ask your captain about alternative techniques you can use. For example, you can use a hookless teaser lure to attract a school of Mahi-mahi.
Another great way to spot mahi-mahi is to look for weedlines, which are patches of vegetation that are usually orangey-brown in color. Weedlines are the best places to find migrating packs of mahi.
Grouper
Florida Keys fishing for grouper is one of the most popular activities in the region. There are several different species of Grouper that can be caught throughout the year. Depending on the location, the rules for grouper fishing can vary.
The best time for grouper fishing in the Florida Keys is in winter and early spring. These are the times when the Gulf Stream brings in better water and more big fish from the deep. It’s also the time of year when the fish are most active.
A great way to catch these fish is by bottom fishing. This involves drifting and working your line around wrecks and reefs.
Another great way to catch grouper is by spearfishing. However, you’ll need a license and the right equipment. You’ll also need to take safety precautions.
Barracuda
One of the best ways to have a great sport fishing experience in the Florida Keys is to go Barracuda fishing. This predator is one of the most aggressive and opportunistic fish in the ocean. You can catch ‘cudas by using artificial lures or live bait.
Barracuda can be found throughout the year in the Florida Keys. They tend to live in shallow water, near white holes, channels, drop offs and islands.
These opportunistic predators are characterized by their elongated bodies, pointed heads, and huge fang-like teeth. Their long, sharp jaws allow them to cut smaller fish in half.
When hooked, barracudas often jump, run, and charge at you. However, these aggressive and unpredictable creatures rarely bite humans. In fact, they are commonly considered a nuisance.
Kayak fishing
Kayak fishing in the Florida Keys is a unique adventure. It combines a lot of fun with some challenging activities.
You will need to have the right equipment and knowledge of the area you’re going to fish. There are lots of options for catching fish in the Florida Keys, from trolling to vertical jigging.
Despite the fact that the Keys are full of tiger sharks and nurse sharks, kayaking can get you away from them. If you’re in a hurry, you can rent a motorized kayak or jet ski to buzz around the water.
During your visit to the Florida Keys, make sure to take in the sights. The waters are crystal clear, making for a breathtaking experience. And, the Florida Keys are home to hundreds of colorful fish. Whether you’re angling for a silver king tarpon or a blacktip shark, you’re sure to have a memorable time.
